A Minecraft Movie Getting A Theatrical "Block Party" Edition Inviting Viewers To Basically Go Wild

It's time to "get loose," Warner Bros. says.

Some screenings of A Minecraft Movie have been rowdy to say the least, with fans tossing popcorn and jumping around in their seats. In at least one case, someone brought a live chicken to a theater to get in on the chicken jockey meme. Warner Bros. appears to be leaning into the chaos with a new "Block Party" edition of the movie coming soon that invites viewers to go wild in theaters.

"You know the moments. You know the lines. You love the songs! Now it's time to get loose, laugh out loud, and belt out those lyrics like a true diamond-tier fan," Warner Bros. said in a news release.

The Block Party Edition of A Minecraft Movie screens on Friday, May 2 in North America and select international markets. Warner Bros. said to check with your local theater to confirm participation. It appears to be a one-day event, and maybe that's for the best.

Some of the screenings for A Minecraft Movie got so intense that the cops were called, prompting some theaters to air disclaimers informing viewers to stay calm. Director Jared Hess responded to the fan frenzy around A Minecraft Movie. Speaking to EW, Hess said, "It's weird when you're having too much fun and the cops get called."

The director went on to say "it's just literally cheering and throwing popcorn," so he found it funny that the police were called. "Yeah, it's hilarious. I've seen so many funny videos. It's great, especially when people are climbing on their friends' shoulders and standing up and cheering for those moments," he said.

A Minecraft Movie premiered in early April and has become a global phenomenon, bringing in more than $800 million so far. The movie is still going strong, having just brought in a further $22 million in the US alone for its fourth weekend in theaters.

A Minecraft Movie is the No. 2 highest-grossing video game film of all time. It sped past Sonic the Hedgehog 3's global haul of $462.5 million, though seems unlikely to overtake The Super Mario Bros. Movie's worldwide total of $1.36 billion.

It's no big surprise, but Warner Bros. management recently indicated that a sequel for A Minecraft Movie is coming, though it's still early days. For more, check out GameSpot's A Minecraft Movie review.

That sounds like a corporation trying to create a lame version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I feel very sorry for any theater workers that have to clean up after these showings.

@Seymour47: Amen. Easy for Warner Brothers and the director to be all "C'mon! Have fun!" Working in a movie theater sucks under normal conditions. Now these poor schmucks have to clean up god knows what because studio execs and directors are encouraging it?

Some BS, that is.

@olddadgamer: It sounds like a promotion so maybe they're getting paid extra for it.

@girlusocrazy: I doubt it. Theater chains are their own thing, and caring about employees is not high on their list of priorities. Hope they are, though. They deserve it.

@olddadgamer: Yep. At least the theaters should have some say in whether or not they host these 'showings'.

Of course, on the other hand, the theater owners couldn't give a wet fart for their employees, so they will probably be all for it.

@TJDMHEM: meh. Any scene with Jack Black in it was fantastic, Jason was okay depending on the scene, but the other main actors were terrible and seemed as if they were just reading lines IMO
