37% Of People Who Started LOTR: Rings Of Power Finished It, According To A Report

The most expensive TV series ever is a major success that has driven people to sign up for Prime, Amazon Studios boss says.

According to a new report, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power had a relatively low viewership completion rate in the US, but Amazon Studios believes the show is a success that will grow further for Season 2 and beyond.

The Hollywood Reporter cited data suggesting that 37% of people in the US who started The Rings of Power finished all of the episodes in Season 1. The site said a completion rate of 50% is considered good but not great. Outside of the US, The Rings of Power got closer to that, reaching about a 45% completion rate among viewers, THR said.

The report did not include any further specifics about viewership for The Rings of Power. According to Amazon, the series was seen by 100 million people. The creative team has five seasons mapped out, including the very last shot. Season 2 is currently filming in the UK, and Season 3 should be officially announced this year.

Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke does not agree with the suggestion that The Rings of Power has come up short. "This desire to paint the show as anything less than a success--it's not reflective of any conversation I'm having internally," she said.

The THR story goes on to dig into some of the reported behind-the-scenes drama at Amazon Studios. Insiders told the site that Amazon Studios has "no sense of what the philosophy is." An anonymous showrunner with multiple shows at Amazon said the company's lack of success is confounding in part because the company has "more money than God."

Salke, for her part, said The Rings of Power and other Amazon Studios shows have driven subscriptions to Amazon Prime, and that's where the real money is. "The proof exists that the giant tentpole shows are driving people to subscribe to Prime," she said.

The full THR story on Amazon Studios is stacked with fascinating insight into one of the biggest companies on the planet--go read it here.

Circling back to The Rings of Power, Season 2 will have "dramatic story turns," the report said, and Salke said this is a "huge opportunity." Salke added that Season 1 "required a lot of setting up" the events to come.

Indeed, Season 1 of The Rings of Power did not reveal Sauron until the very last episode. Now that the main villain is out in the wild, things are starting to heat up story-wise.

"It's going to grittier, more intense, maybe a little scarier," executive producer Lindsey Weber said. "Certainly, it has a lot of the same other tonal ranges that you find in the show, which we feel are really sort of fundamental to feeling like you're in Middle-earth, but once Sauron is openly on the move and working his plans, things get rather interesting."

In other news, The Rings of Power Season 2 suffered some setbacks recently when a horse died and a warehouse caught fire.

In addition to The Rings of Power Season 2, there are new The Lord of the Rings movies in development right now, but it's still very early days. On the more immediate horizon, there are five more Lord of the Rings video games set for release in the next two years.

This show was juuuuuust bad. It didn’t adapt anything, and seemed like they were making it up as they went. I was looking forward to this show right up to release, was hype starting up the first episode, but then by the end of that episode, I was so angry. I’ve never felt anger like this from a tv show, this is new for me. I just couldn’t believe the blatant disrespect to Tolkien and his work. I haven’t read into too many of the negative reviews (or positive, for that matter) but my opinion is that this show was lower than a dumpster fire. I watched the second and third episodes to see if it got better, and it only got worse and worse. The stories I grew up loving, the characters, the world, it was all screwed up, in a very cheap way. I will not ever watch this show going forward. It is not worth my time, or the money that’s being spent on it. For the writers and show runners to think they can make their own story up with Tolkien’s characters… it’s hubris…

As a huge fan of LotR, I absolutely loved it. It was shot beautifully and had some really good characters. Pacing may have started out a bit slow, but it really ramped up in later episodes. I look forward to what's to come.

Also, why can't we reply on anything Harry Potter related? I'd really like to discuss the new HBO series reboot announcement.

@deckard26364: While I'm not typically rushing to the defense of people who criticize things they haven't experienced for themselves, labelling someone passing on a series they don't think they'll enjoy as "cancel culture" would be a mischaracterization.

If they had said the show personally made them feel unsafe and then started a change.org petition to get everyone involved fired, shamed, and blacklisted, then yes- cancel culture. If anything, reactions like this were what kept the world spinning before people started to believe it revolved around them and their belief system.

Shame I really enjoyed it. Thought it was way better than House of the Dragon. Now that was a boring, dark (literally) show with more plot holes than Swiss cheese.

@mogan: That same argument can be made about any show on prime, that doesn't make the show any less trash. 37% finishing a show like that is not a good number, any way you slice it.

@ripp0ntare: Whether or not the show is “trash” isn’t important to Amazon if it drives Prime subs. That’s the entire point.

@mogan: I suppose if you take the long view, they got a bump for subscriptions for "season 1".

But did you know that they had to commit to 5 seasons to get the rights ???

How are they going to feel $100 million and 4 seasons from now??

Will it have been a good gamble?

They might even give up trying to produce the show with decent production values if no one is watching and re-budget that money within the series to grease some palms toward other projects they have lined up.

Like "hey producer, we'll pay you 10 times current salary if you'll do this next project for free" and then fire the effects team.

That's an exaggeration to make a point.

Just saying that seasons 2-5 may not result in any new subscriptions .

LOTR fans are apparently quite a salty bunch and very particular about how their beloved content comes to video.

I personally loved the movies, but I wouldn't call myself a LOTR fan. I never even read all the books, so I'm not saying I'm qualified to judge anyone's taste about it. Just trying to state facts as I see them.

@silentchief: If the show got people to sub and stay subbed even while they weren’t watching, that’d explain why Amazon is saying RoP was a success even though only 37% finished season one.

@mogan: Or because it looks good to shareholders.

Hey, we just saw MS admit all their hot air claiming GamePass is super successful was just BS, and Amazon has a history of being just as bad. Why would you be so quick to believe them now?

@mogan: There's no proof that it increased subs. They are claiming it's a success because it's the most expensive show of all time and any claim otherwise will get massive blowback from shareholders. It had the expectation of being their most watch show and it was nowhere close to that.

@silentchief: We don’t know if it did or didn’t increase subs, just that Amazon’s calling it a success. You asked how 37% of viewers finishing the season could be a positive; I’m just saying that’s probably not a number that matters to Amazon as much as Prime subscribers.

I watched a episode and a half and it was beautifully shot but to be honest it was a borefest and I stopped watching. some of it was fluff. I rather watch the movies than watch the series.

This is not a statement about quality, but I think I watched 75% of Ep 1 and stopped. It wasn't bad, I just din';t fee the need to watch more - it never grabbed me.

There is an error in "The Hollywood Reporter cited data suggesting that 37% of people in the US who started The Rings of Power did not finish all of the episodes in Season 1." I think that is supposed to say 37% of people did finish all of the episodes in Season 1, because that looks like a 63% completion rate, which is good. lol

I finished it, and it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't real good either. Too many characters and the story just tried to rush from one epic/emotional moment to another without taking enough time to make them feel believable. The show sure looked great, but if Season 2's writing isn't better, I doubt I'll finish that one.

@mogan: "finished it, and it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't real good either."

Pretty accurate description.

Wasn't "the worst thing in the history of man ever" as typical internet response, but it wasn't great either. Just meh. Put on in the background.

My girlfriend and I didn't continue after the first episode. And even that was a slog to get through. Same with House Of Dragons. Maybe these types of shows aren't for me anymore. I more enjoy stuff like Black Bird, The Bear, White Lotus, Midnight Mass, Severance, Maid.
