320GB PS3 soon to be sold solo

Highest capacity HDD-equipped console will sell for $350 a la carte starting today, $50 more than 160GB version, $50 less than 320GB Move bundle.

In August, Sony announced it was increasing the capacity of the PlayStation 3's hard drive by releasing 160GB and 320GB models of the console. But while the former was available solo for the same $300 price point as the discontinued 120GB model, the latter was only available as party of a $400 bundle, which included the PlayStation Eye camera, Move controller, and minigame compilation Sports Champions.

The 320GB PS3 will cost $350 in the US.

Today, Sony announced that the 320GB PS3 will soon be available on its own for $350. Stand-alone units of the console (pictured) will begin shipping today and will arrive in stores in the near future.

The 320GB and 160GB models are just the latest in a long line of reconfigurations of the PlayStation 3, which debuted in 2006 with 60GB and 20GB of hard drive space. Since then, 40GB, 80GB, 120GB, and 250GB HDD-equipped versions have been released. Along the way, the console both lost and gained functionalities, with the backward compatibility of early models disappearing and the console recently receiving native Netflix playback.

@jeremiah06 that would be one of the smartest move on the ps3, the ps2 had a lot of great games that i still have, if an update allows ps2 on ps3 the ps2 would be gone or sold even less

How many SKU's is that now for the PS3? I completely lost count. Some had PS2 b/c, some don't. Some had 4 usb ports, memory card readers and Linux O/S, some don't. lol!! What a mess. I'm glad I still have my 60GB PS3. I hope it lasts 10-15 more yrs. ******************************************************************** @leonard88 i will only get a new one once it has ps2 backwards compatibility *********************************************************** Me too. Otherwise I'll backup my currently 60GB drive and copy the data to a 80GB thumb drive and then copy it back to a 320GB+ drive. I think I still have a lot of memory on my 60GB drive though.

They need to bundle this with the Move controller then it can compete head to head with the 360/Kinect bundle. A 1.5 TB external drive can be found for about $115, you can load all your, music, videos, copied games, etc. to it. That way users like me that have an early 60 GB (backwards compatable) PS3 don't have to waste time and money upgrading.

Instead of bigger and bigger HDD why don't they do something like a RAM upgrade, or better GPU so the PS3HDWii can have graphics on par with the mighty 360. I wonder if this will come with the pretty little pink ball on a wand wavey around Wii copy thingy?

Why, if they make such a big deal about being able to change the hard drive yourself, do they get so freaking worked up about releasing yet another version with a different sized hard drive?

Before I yloded I had about 20GB of space left off a 320GB HDD. That's with about 25GB of music and the rest game data and DLC. I'm hoping someone comes out with a 2.5" 1TB 9.5mm HDD before I decide to buy the 750GB.

I'm surprised they haven't put these bigger hard drive out sooner, especially seeing as how Microsoft and Sony want their consoles to be the media center of the household. I have the 120gb 360, which I only have 51gb left. I have 2 movies downloaded, 71 Arcade titles, and the rest is either DLC, or game saves. So I know I'm going to eventually invest in the 250gb hard drive. I remember when the 360 only had the 20gb. Man did that fill up fast! My PS3 is 160gb version, so I think it's straight for now.

I don't think its that necessary to buy it with that much space. If my PS3 decides to randomly die on me, which hopefully is unlikely, then I would probably just get the 160gb version... It's not like I would use all that space.

@BlackBaldwin The [Backup System] isn't in the [Settings] for no reason. Many people - including IGN have backed up the system on an USB drive and it works. I don't get where you get the hundred bucks from, other than buying an USB hard-disk drive and a 2,5" Serial Ata price combined, because I can easily get a Western Digitals 250GB @ 7200rpm S-ATA II 2,5" for 50e.

Hmm.. no thanks Sony! 160gb here, I download games and movies all the time and am not even close to being at capacity! The key is to delete the installation data of the games you don't play anymore since they usually take 2-10gb a piece.

I wish Sony would stop releasing ludicrously sized HD's, and just lower the price of their models.

LOL, I'm still enjoying my $99 slimline PS2. When Sony releases the PS4, and the price of the PS3 comes down to earth, then I may purchase one. Don't have as much petty cash lying around as I once did.

@TevoxZi, I called sony to see if there was anyway to transfer the data and the guy I talked to said he didn't know of a way to do it or more importantly sony didn't have a way to do it. So I guess I could try using a usb to do it but I rather have a tested method before spending a hundred bux on a 2.5 in computer HDD upgrade...

I have a 120gig harddrive slim and I actually used up almost all of my hard drive I wouldn't mind upgrading the HDD but theirs no way of transfering the data off the old drive soo I guess I'll just keep what I got and delete some dlc and remove some games I downloaded off of psn...
