11 Years Later, Okami On PS4 And Xbox One Is Still A Masterpiece

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

They're good dogs.

Okami is still fantastic. Even in a year like 2017, which had dozens of amazing games and several terrific open-world adventures, the updated Okami HD feels like it could have been a new release. Okami is an ageless classic that, even after 11 years since the last time played it, is somehow even better than I remember.

Loving Okami isn't a new hot take; when the original released back in 2006, it was a critical darling; it's currently 93% on Metacritic, and our own review at the time gave it a 9 out of 10. But publisher Capcom was disappointed by the game's low sales. After developer Clover had another commercial failure in God Hand--along with the departure of key personnel later that same year--the studio was shut down in 2007. And yet despite the game's post-release troubles, Okami still stands out as a significant achievement.

Now Playing: Okami HD Running On The PC

Much of Okami's timelessness is due to the bold, brush-stroke-inspired art style. Okami was gorgeous even on PS2, and Okami HD is a faithful tribute to the game's everlasting beauty. When you're stationary, the screen is a painting. Slight, subtle movements of the air are portrayed with thin flowing lines, and your wolf-form pulses with whirls of energy. In movement, the game runs at a noticeably lower frame-rate, at least on Xbox One and PS4, but Okami's hyper-stylized version of feudal Japan is like seeing a painting come to life.

The game overall is an obvious homage to the Legend of Zelda series, but your ability to use the world as a literal canvas for your god-like brush strokes makes Okami feel inspired and unique rather than just a derivative Zelda clone. The drawings you create on-screen are simple enough that they don't stall the momentum of battle, and the mechanics are generous enough that even for someone as artistically untalented as myself, creating circles and lines makes me feel like I missed my calling as a painter.

No Caption Provided

But how does the updated Okami HD change the experience? Having not touched the game since it's PS2 release 11 years ago, Okami stays true to my memories, but I'm constantly surprised by how modern it feels. There are no story or gameplay changes for this update. There are some aspect ratio options, and the game has a sharper look than its PS2 predecessor, but otherwise this is a port of the original game. Besides the frame-rate issue, there are a few small issues that could've used a fix. Text speed is inconsistent--sometimes you can quickly speed through dialogue; other times, words crawl slowly along the screen, completely oblivious to your button-mashing attempts to speed them up. And the game oscillates between gently pointing you in the right direction with a map marker, or putting a huge, unmissable arrow in front of you that points the way to your next goal. But these are minor issues that don't detract from what is a sprawling modern masterpiece.

One thing remains blissfully unchanged about the game--there is no voice acting. Oddly, the game was dinged in our original review for its lack of voiceover, and to be fair, it released alongside other cinematic games with great performances such as Final Fantasy XII, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, and Bully. But the lack of voice acting in Okami insulates the game in some ways from its occasionally inconsistent characterizations and the general danger of overacting--which, as we've seen in more recent games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, can pull down an otherwise solid story.

In remakes and remasters, sometimes games can feel like historical relics compared to current releases--they were great for their time, but they have some element that just doesn't hold up today. Or worse, your memory of a game had glossed over the flaws that stand out in stark relief once you pick up a controller today. But the years have only been more kind to Okami. It's a humorous piece of interactive folklore; a fast and loose take on Japanese mythology that I loved back in 2006 and that feels just as fresh and exciting today.

@snugglebear: Yep. I never finished the game on PS2. I thought I was near the end, but I was actually halfway through. I bought it on PS4 the other day and am going through it now, and am again halfway through (though a couple hours past where I stopped the first time). I gifted it to my brother on the One just now which I hope he enjoys it. He's a big fan of Zelda and Okami is akin to that. Your comment is somewhat old, but you said what I was just thinking so I thought I'd reply to your comment.

Absolutely a classic. But be warned, it's a pretty long game.

It's also not very challenging. I never died. But this is the same as the Zeldas of the time (WW + TP).

Critics & fans love it, but apparently, majority don't.

@Thanatos2k: Well, the devs broke off and became Platinum Games. So at least some good came out of it. Also, Okami sold like shit when it first came out so that's not a huge surprise.

Too bad that the PS4 version has the same exact trophies as the PS3 version and if you already platinum-ed the PS3 version you will get no trophies on the PS4 version.

@jamesbr27: That's strange. Because every PS4 game I have that is a remaster of a PS3 game, I was able to double dip on trophies for it.

@jamesbr27: Does that mean it’s cross play/save as well? Also, does the move support remain?

@Mr_Meteos: No, they cut the Move support from what I've seen which is really dumb. Okami on PS3 got more Move action than any other game.

And 30FPS, which sucks ass on PC.

How to ruin a remaster; don't actually remaster it.

@DAOWAce: Gameplay is tied to the framerate, so yeah it's a proper remaster. What you are describing is a remake, building the game from zero on a new engine, which is way more difficult, time and money consuming.

And 30 fps don't suck just on PC, they suck even on consoles, depending on the game. I can play Okami just fine on 30 fps and so can you if you get off your high horse of PC master race and start enjoying the game...

@antonis13: There's nothing PC master race about wanting a framerate games 35 years ago on 8/16bit consoles had.

Get off your ignorance mountain.

The only games I can personally tolerate at 30FPS are card games, where input and update rate barely matter. Everything else? 30 feels like garbage. 45 is the bare minimum my brain can tolerate, and 55+ is where it starts getting smooth and responsive enough to be pleasant.

If you can tolerate 30FPS games, cool, good for you, I'm envious. But I can't.

@DAOWAce: Spoiled is what you are my friend. The majority of people in this world can tolerate 30 fps. Many don't even like more. If you cannot cope with games that don't offer a better rate, then perhaps you need to take a long look at your gaming life.

@DAOWAce: I grew up playing Star Fox and PS1/2 games that were all <=30 FPS. It was fine then, and it's fine now (except for shooters and racing games because obviously).

@deactivated-5a411408acdf8: It's a Zelda style game based on the teachings of Shintoism. The wolf is the physical manifestation of Amaterasu the goddess of the sun. The game is about bringing light back to a world swallowed by darkness. It's a Zelda style game with a timeless art style, that's all that really matters.

@7tizz: In the same way the jist of a shooter is going around shooting stuff. Though most shooters are just that, the ones that stand out have something else.

It's all about exploration of old lore and the art style. If lore and art style is not your bag, then this game is not for you.

The game is overrated. I bought it on PS2 and PS3.

The first couple hours are great despite it being incredibly wordy. Then the game just sucks after that. It becomes too open. That is when I stopped playing both versions.

@stuff238: "Too open." What the hell does that even mean compared to games like Skyrim that pretty much have no main story and just let you do whatever from the start? Don't tell me you were lost for what to do next because it's always rather clear and the areas really aren't that big. Definitely not by today's standards.

@Atzenkiller: He means that the areas are too large with too much to do, and you aren't guided enough.

It's a matter of taste. I thought the opening was slow, so I'm the opposite of him.

This game has better overworld gameplay than Zelda, but the dungeons are not as good.

@lostn: But they weren't, that's why I was confused. This is a PS2 era game and while it might have been big at the time it's nothing compared to today's games. But I guess the game did not have as many arrows showing you where to go at all times as modern games, you actually had to read some text.

@KahnArtizt: True. The Zelda games usually don't have all kinds of indicators telling you where to go either. Although I haven't played any game in the series for quite some time.

@Atzenkiller: They still don't. BotW just lets you do what you want. It has indicators but you have to go into the map to see them and they don't tell you where to go when the objective is supposed to be a clue or riddle you have to figure out.

And why wouldn't it be (still a masterpiece)?

The thing that shocked me the most when I played it, and thought the game was done blew me away that I was only half way through and still have another 20-25 hours to keep playing.

That tells me that Clover knew that while it could be two games, they also knew they might not have another chance to make a sequel so they just threw both stories together into one game.

THAT to me is one of the many great reasons why it's a masterpiece, it has it's faults, but many of those aren't important in the overall view of the whole of the game.

Lower framerate than what? It was 30 fps on PS2 and the devs haven't increased it because it would mess with animation and game logic. I haven't seen any dips, so I have no idea what the author of this article is talking about.

@Legend_of_Link: XBC2 can be very dense and complex, especially in the beginning. Okami is much less stressful and way more pleasant to experience. Both are great but Okami is timeless, especially if you like Zelda.
