Like most people, I am a fan of the Alien series but get so frustrated with the awful games to put out. This one seemed to have potential and I was excited to give it a chance but it certainly did not meet expectations.
The shooting aspect of the gameplay is fine, satisfying even. The AI teammates are shockingly competent. The cover mechanics are unnecessary though and considering how open the settings are and how quickly enemies swarm you, You really aren't given many chances to really get into cover before you have to rush out of it and avoid being attacked. There is also an awkward stamina mechanic that feels tacked on and this affects you when you try to roll out of the way of enemies who are attacking you. For a game that should have very much been a run and gun shooter, Adding on these awkward pieces to the gameplay felt more forced than anything else and it would have been much better off without.
The multiplayer, which is the only thing that may even possibly give this game a bit of life after you beat the short campaign, is shoddy at best. Connection is spotty, It takes forever to get a match started, and then you have to hope to be able to actually complete a mission without being dropped out. Considering this was their key selling point of the game, You'd figure they'd have taken a lot more time to polish it than they did.
The campaign features 12 very linear missions with the same mission objectives each time - Hit this button, Survive and escape. There's nothing to explore, no collectibles to pick up, once you've beaten it, you really have no incentive to revisit these levels. And it is even more frustrating with how repetitive and similar each mission is to the other. Once you have played the first mission, You've virtually played them all since they're the exact same thing except with a slightly different setting (4 areas total, 3 missions in each area).
After beating missions, You have the potential to buy and upgrade weapons but that takes far too much time and effort than what it is worth. These purchases are costly and require a lot of grinding out to get. Clearly, this was made in such a way to make you play the game more but ultimately, It makes you want to play it less. If you can already beat it with your starting weapons, What's the incentive to try it out with different or upgraded weapons? It doesn't make much sense to me.
Overall: 3/10
This game has no long-term worth. It is OK if you want a simple game you can grind out in a day or two but if you want something you'll be able to put more than 20 hours into, Look elsewhere. The awkward gameplay mechanics, the lack of replay value, and the painfully simple, linear levels just ruin this one.
